My computer seems to run slower than when I first bought it. How can I clean it off to make it run faster?
Delete the temporary and unwanted files, run Disk Cleanup, Defragment the drive and make sure you scan the machine regularly for a virus. Also, you may have spyware on your computer. Contact the HelpDesk for assistance in removing it.
I know that I saved a file on my computer but it disappeared. How can I find it?
Go to Start > Search > Files or folders and type in the name or parts of the name of the file you are looking for and hit search. Similarly, on the Mac, go to the Spotlight menu (the magnifying glass in the upper right corner) and begin typing the name or part of the name. The search results will display accordingly.
I get a blue screen whenever I start my computer. What does that mean?
Check the connections and make sure the monitor is connected to the CPU.
Should I run Disk Cleanup on my computer? How do I do that?
You should run scan disk at least once a month, more often depending on how often you use the computer, To do so: Go to Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Scan Disk.
Can I borrow a Windows operating system CD from the HelpDesk?
Most of the time we cannot re-install or upgrade your current operating system. However, if you know your software license, we can re-install your operating system for you.
I need Microsoft Office on my own computer. Can I check it out?
No, we only provide Microsoft Office software to faculty and staff. You can purchase a copy from the bookstore or from e-Academy.
I need to use SPSS for a class, where I can get to it?
It is available on the Daly lab's computers. You cannot obtain the installation CD from the HelpDesk.
My mouse is only moving in one direction? What's wrong with it?
If it's an optical mouse, make sure you are not on a reflective surface. If it's not an optical mouse, chances are it's dirty and you need to clean it. Open the lid on the underside of your mouse; wipe clean the ball and the rollers inside.
I spilled a drink on my keyboard. Can you clean it?
Yes. Turn off your computer and - if it's a notebook - pull out your battery. First try to spray the keyboard with "Air Duster" (available at the school store or any other computer store.) If the spill is large, bring it to Tech. Services and ask for their assistance or call ext. 7878.
I get a message saying that my system memory is full and to close open applications. How can I get rid of it?
Close down all of your unnecessary applications. Restart your computer and run a virus scan. Viruses can eat up lots of system memory. If neither of these solutions is sufficient for your needs, you may consider upgrading the system memory in you computer.
I set a password on my screensaver, but I don't remember what it is?
Restart the computer if the screensaver is currently running. Right click on the background and click Customize my desktop > screen saver > disable the screen saver password.
How can I clean off my temporary internet files?
Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel > Internet Options > Delete Cookies > Clear History.
I'm worried about my privacy, is it possible for people to get my personal information if I go to websites?
When you make purchases online make sure the company you are purchasing from is using a secure server. There will be a notice at the bottom of the page saying secure . Most transactions over the web now are secure. This does not guarantee anything. As security is getting better so are the thieves, always be cautious when giving you credit card or any other important information to anyone. Use your judgment.
Can I get a virus through email? How can I prevent opening an email with a virus?
Yes you can get a virus through email and yes you can prevent it. Do not open any attachments from people you do not trust or know. Scan all files that you do download with antivirus software before opening them.
How do I update my virus definitions to get the latest updates?
If you own a copy of Norton AntiVirus - and most other antivirus software applications - you may open it and run Live Update. This can be setup through task manager in the Control Panel to be done automatically.

Did you add any new software to your computer recently? Sometimes this causes problems.
Check to see if your computer is "talking" to the network. While the computer is on, look in the back where the network cable (usually blue) is attached. There should be two lights - green and orange. The green light should be on and the orange light should blink. If so, it's a software problem. If neither light is on, check the connection to be sure the cable is in tight (don't just look - try to push it into place). If that doesn't help, contact the HelpDesk to see if the network is down.
