The Internet Mail Access Protocol (IMAP) Server
At Washington College all email is stored in one central location on the IMAP server. Each member of the WC community has an email account on the IMAP server. Using your email account you can access Mulberry and WebMail, the 2 email systems supported by the Office of Information Technologies.
Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP)
LDAP is Washington College's electronic directory system. It contains directory information for everyone employed or attending Washington College. The information in the LDAP directory is updated weekly.
Learn how to set up and use LDAP with Thunderbird at the OITWiki.
Washington College Email System
- Each user has one email account that gives them access to both Thunderbird and WebMail.
- Using WebMail users can access their email, address books, campus email directory, and personal calendar from anywherein the world.
- Using the electronic directory known as LDAP, users can find directory information for members of the WC community. This information is only available to members of the WC community.
- The technologies that make up the new email environment are fully supported by OIT. OIT also has access to technical support for these products.
Washington College uses a product called "SquirrelMail" as its web based email program. SquirrelMail is often referred to as WebMail. WebMail contains all the functionality you expect from an email client including strong support for attachments, address books, and folders. Advantages of WebMail are that WebMail is available to anyone in the WC community who has Internet access and Internet Explorer or Netscape. Mulberry is excellent for accessing your email when you are off campus, on campus or anywhere in the world. To learn more about WebMail contact the HelpDesk at ext. 7777.
Your network identity or Net Id is a unique identity. If you are the first or only person at WC with your first initial and last name, then your Net ID consists of your "First Initial" + "Last Name" + "Numbe". The number "1" is not used because it is easily confused with the lowercase letter "L." For example, if your name were Aaron Ujamaa, your Net ID would be "aujamaa2." The next person with the same first initial and last name would be "aujamaa3." If there were four duplicate names, the fourth person would be "aujamaa5." You will use your Net ID to log into Mulberry and WebMail.
Your password is linked to your Net ID. Please do not share your password with anyone. Though your password goes across the network encrypted, for your protection, OIT recommends you change your password every 90 days. If you forget your password, please complete the "Request Password" form or contact the HelpDesk. Click here to go to the Change Password webpage.
